Suspicious Prostitutes by SC4V3NG3R Suspicious Prostitutes by SC4V3NG3R
This is inspired from Rome Sweet Rome. It is a story about a marine platoon(or something)  suddenly finding themselves back in time, during the first years of the Roman Empire, under Augustus. This interesting concept took birth in a reddit thread that was discussing modern military versus classical Rome. Apparently they are making a movie out of this..though i think an HBO/netflix series would be vastly superior.

I just took the general idea and give it a different spin. There's so little art about that concept.

Picture's awesome, I love the expressions and the detail - especially in the cobblestone streets and camo. I am also, however, a nitpicky little bastard and that Marie's going to burn his hand holding on to the suppressor like that.

Well in Rome sweet Rome, an entire platoon got transported back in time, including the stockpile and several vehicule. They would'nt be running out of ammo for a while.  If it was a single marine he'd need to be smart about it.

In this environment, nobody would actually recognize he is carrying a gun. He would not really need to be stealthy with it and if anyone asked him what that thing is he could sling some cheesy oneliner, like e.g. "this? It's only for pest control!" :D

yeah you're kind of right. It probably looks like a broken piece of crossbow for anyone of that time.   Could definately draw more attention during a gunpowder age since it's recognizable as a gun.

Got it yesterday, but it took several passes, like for that ceramic/stone tablet (right above his ear and his eye-hud) graphically advertising the nature of the business establishment.

You can read the original reddit thread in the link below if you have'nt founded it yet. Not sure if there's more outside of this, but the project is still pending for a green light.

What about when they run out of ammo?

True but you can still do allot of damage with modern equipment vs ancient army long before you run out of ammo. And if your a Legionary, your smart enough to not just keep throwing troops at a unknown enemy and hope their weapons run out of ammo... assuming that a legionary figures out that their alien weapons even use ammo.

It would most likely turn into a cat and mouse game with numbers on the legionaries side and firepower and evasive training for the Marines.

In "Rome Sweet Rome" it's a Marine unit of 2,200 men, but I prefer the idea of a platoon, and a single guy from the platoon like in that painting of yours.

Also, you'll find a mix of modern arms and roman settings in the art for Lest Darkness Fall by Sprague de Camp.  But I prefer what you've done here to all those book covers  saw over the decades. You've brought to life the really dry (but nice) B and W drawings from Roman City by David Macaulay.  When  I saw this it was "wow, marpat camouflage, Macauley's city, and wonderful, believable characters.

On est très, très loin des camps fortifiés de Babaorum, Petibonum, etc.

In the story, they also have the 2 forces engaging each other. I find this unlikely in a realistic context.  Augustus or any Roman elites of that time are more than likely to engage in diplomacy than chasing down an Apache chopper.
There were also enough intellectuals to perhaps even understand where the marine came from.   You could expect a Roman world conquest on the back of the Marines' tech, as the end result.

Just got around that book synopsis you mentionned. Looks pretty good. Think i'll give it a shot.

I went with an MP5, easier to conceal.  I suppose you could find such weapons in a stockpile back at their base.
